Even with huge improvements in industrial sector today, most of the thermal energy requirement is met using fossil fuels. Not only in industries, even for community cooking, space cooling etc. where there is requirement for huge thermal energy still uses fossil fuels. The session will deliberate upon how Concentrated Solar Technologies (CSTs) is one of such technology which can be used as sustainable source of thermal energy. CST works like a concave mirror, which focuses the incoming solar radiation (insolation) onto a receiver. The receiver gets heated up and the heat will be transfer to the working fluid, which can be used for various processes. Using this technology, a temperature of 90-250OC can be achieved, which is the range required for most industrial and commercial applications. Industries having good potential for implementation of CST are food processing, dairy, paper and pulp, chemicals, textiles, fertilizer, breweries, electroplating, pharmaceutical, rubber, desalination, tea and tobacco sectors.

Any industrial/commercial establishments currently using steam/hot water for process applications can also employ CSTs with a minimum modification in existing setup which can help to reduce conventional fuels which in turn will help in reducing GHG emissions.

Discussion Points
•    Addressing the barriers identified
•    Drafting policies to target the 6.5 GW identified potential by MNRE – UNIDO Roadmap
•    Create demand by setting obligations to industries consuming heat
•    Make standards mandatory on PRIORITY for all upcoming projects
•    Stricter norms on performance to ensure consumer confidence
