Development of hydro power is essential for sustainable development and the Government of Himachal Pradesh is committed to this onerous task. It is doing its best to develop the total hydro power potential of the State in order to provide its people adequate quality power at economical cost, while ensuring reliability.

Large untapped hydro potential exists in the Himalayas, which can make a substantial contribution to total power generation in India. Himachal Pradesh, a mountainous state, enjoys a geographical advantage in this regard.

Nestled in the northern region of India, it is blessed with abundant water resources in its five major rivers that are Chenab, Ravi, Beas, Satluj and Yamuna, which emanate from the western Himalayas and flow through the state. These snow fed rivers and their tributaries carry copious discharge all year round which can be exploited for power generation.

The State has so far identified Hydro Power Potential of 27,436 MW, out of which about 23,500 MW has been assessed as harnessable. A potential of 10,547 MW has been harnessed so far in various sectors out of which a potential of 609 MW falls in the category of Renewable Energy that is under 25 MW. Besides, Himachal Pradesh has immense potential for solar energy and the State is taking policy initiatives to harness the same.
